Planning on ordering new window blinds? Here are the expert tips you need! Read on and you’ll find our easy steps to make the process simple and accurate!
Before you get started
Here are a few essentials before getting started on measuring your windows for new blinds:
- Use a steel measuring tape – keep it straight and tight or use a laser measure
- Measure in millimetres (mm) and be exact
- Measure all your windows, even if they appear to be the same width and height – looks can be deceptive
- Print our instructions to keep them handy as you measure.
Measuring large windows? Having someone to help you will make things a whole heap easier!
Which part of your windows do you need to measure?
That all-important question depends on what type of roller blinds you’re ordering. It’s either a front or back roll.
- Front roll (commonly fixed in the reveal) roller blinds – these lower inside your window frame. You need to measure there.
- Back roll (commonly outside mount onto the architrave or wall) roller blinds – these lower over your window frame. You need to measure from the outside edge of the window architrave to the other end.
Measuring for front roll roller blinds
Width – measure across your window frame
- Measure the inside edge of your window frame where the brackets will go
Drop – measure down your window frame
- Measure the inside edge of the window frame. Don’t worry about taking any deductions – we’ll do this for you.
Measuring for back roll roller blinds
Width – measure across your window frame
- Measure the outside edge of your window architrave
Drop – measure down your window frame
- Measure outside edge of the window architrave. There’s no need to take any deductions for back roll blinds.
Measuring for multiple blinds hung together
If you’re measuring for two or more blinds hung together or sliding doors, simply follow the same instructions above. Just take a note of the following:
- For window frames with two panels – measure the left inside edge to the centre of the mullion (the vertical divider that separates each panel from the other). Then measure right inside edge to the centre of the mullion. The sum of the two measurements must equal the full width of the window.
- Or, for window frames with three panels – measure one section at a time to the centre of each mullion. The sum of the three must equal the full width.
Final checklist
- Double-check you’ve measured the correct areas of your windows
- Decide which side you want your roller blind cords to be on – left or right?
- Measure everything twice, just to be sure!
